From Artificial Intelligence to Augmented Intelligence

S ince the official beginning of artificial intelligence back in 1956, AI has experienced several ups and downs. Today, it’s at another peak, fueled by better algorithms, more data, and stronger computing power. AI is no longer a topic discussed only by researchers; the masses have started to take notice, especially since Google’s AlphaGo program beat Lee Sedol, a human champion of the game Go. The AI victory last March prompted people to consider who is more intelligent, AI or humans. Even before the victory, I was part of a panel at a TV dialogue program, where we discussed the achievements of AI. Other panelists included representatives from both academia and industry. The program, which featured competitions between AI and humans, was structured to be fun and engaging. Here, I review the competitions and consider what the outcomes say about the state of AI.
